Technology Demonstration

Power Quality international, inc. has developed the PQI HarmitigatorTechnology Demonstration Vehicle, which is fully capable of demonstrating the benefits of harmonic current reduction in an electrical distribution system and transformer performance under both linear and nonlinear loading.

This fully equipped demonstration vehicle can be used as the basis for a one and a half-hour presentation on power quality and efficiency fundamentals and a half- or full-day seminar on the Benefits of Harmonic Current Reduction.

PQI HarmitigatorTechnology Demonstration Vehicle

The agenda for the full-day seminar on the Benefits of Harmonic Current Reduction includes:

  1. INTRODUCTION – The source, phase sequence and magnitude of harmonic currents in a modern electrical distribution system.

  2. SYSTEM PERFORMANCE – A review of system performance outcomes under nonlinear load conditions.

  3. POWER QUALITY – A review of power quality problems under nonlinear load conditions.

  4. POSITIVE- & NEGATIVE-SEQUENCE HARMONIC CURRENTS – Methods used to cancel positive- and negative-sequence harmonic currents in an electrical distribution system.

  5. ZERO-SEQUENCE HARMONIC CURRENTS – Methods used to shunt zero-sequence harmonic currents in an electrical distribution system.

  6. POWER QUALITY CLAIMS – An analysis of the claims made by various manufacturers regarding harmonic mitigation and power quality.

  7. DEMONSTRATIONS

    • A typical current waveform and harmonic profile produced by a switch-mode power supply.

    • A typical current waveform and harmonic profile produced by the PQI Nonlinear Load Bank.

    • The effect of circuit length (impedance) on voltage distortion and neutral-ground voltage at the loads.

    • The effect of zero-sequence harmonic current reduction on voltage distortion and neutral-ground voltage at the loads.

    • The effect of zero-sequence harmonic current injection into a conventional transformer.

    • The effect of zero-sequence harmonic current injection into a Type ‘DV’ Distribution TransFilter.

    • Calculate the effect of harmonic currents on a conventional and a Distribution TransFilter under various nonlinear load conditions.

    • Discuss the various methods used to measure transformer losses and efficiency under linear and nonlinear load conditions.

    • Measure the effect of harmonic currents on a conventional and a Distribution TransFilter under nonlinear load conditions.

  8. EFFICIENCY CLAIMS – An analysis of the claims made by various manufacturers regarding the efficiency of their transformers and their measurement method.

  9. FINANCIAL ISSUES – A review of the financial issues that result from harmonic current injection into an electrical distribution system.

  10. FINANCIAL BENEFIT – Calculate the financial benefits that occur when substituting or replacing a conventional transformer with a Distribution TransFilter

Demonstrations can be arranged by calling PQI at (888) 539-7712 or by contacting our local representative.
